After months of battenburglessness I now know that the world still revolves without this delicious cake. Yet I have no answer as to why everyone doesn't think sweetcorn and mushrooms are the evil spawn of satan? If only they did the world would be a much better place!

I decided to use this weekend to get my iTunes library up to date and copy in all the music I want in, but just hadn't got round to doing it.

While I've been on I noticed something curious, and now it's niggling and I need to know whether it's normal or just that I have an odd DVD drive.

So, the thing that's niggling is: When I put a CD in, for the first few songs it'll import at a rate of about 2x, then by about track 5 or 6 it gets faster, sometimes jumping upto about 16x.

Is it normal for such drives to read slower at certain points on a CD or do I just have an odd drive?

I'd say you have an odd drive - the speed *should* stay constant, or resonably so. However it could also be your PC that is the cause of the problem, as if it can't encode the data fast enough at the start, it'll just do it at a slower rate.

It might be something silly like AV software kicking in, slowing down how quickly iTunes can write to the HD - which would result in a slower encoding rate.
