photoI'm a powder hounding, non-smoking, theatre going, hockey skating, straight talking, trumpet playing, thrill seeking, bramble swigging, motorbike riding, up and doing guy! I'm the guy who started OUTeverywhere - I do try desperately to reply to all messages, but it never works that way - the best way to chat is to come along to an event and meet me. OUT was one of the first 'social networking websites' and definitely one of the first to blend the online world with the real-life world of its Members, with many many thousands of social events having been organised offline by the folk who communicate online.

The big boys like Facebook, Twitter and others are catching up and this year, 2010, they will introduce major localisation features (my prediction!) that will enable their users to more easily 'meet up' in the real world. New services like Foursquare and Gowalla are already here that mainly work on iPhone but require you to do 'geeky' things like "check in" to locations you're at - so you get to a bar or restaurant and you have to fire up your 'app' and check-in. Eeek.

Nowadays it's all about "real-time" - what's happening RIGHT NOW that I might be interested in? Facebook's a lot about sharing photos and 'status updates' with your friends, Twitter is a more open network where you 'follow' interesting people and hope people will follow you, and share tips and web links. Other social networks are about your friends tracking where you are in the real world. OUT merges a lot of stuff but hasn't "caught up" yet on the mobile-device support and the 'real-time' bit isn't really developed so much, though "The Pulse" is getting there.

A lot of people in their 30s and beyond long for the return of IRC where you chatted in real-time in different subject/place/theme-oriented chat rooms. And then there were 'talkers' like Olajier and Monochrome BBS, providing social networking back in the early 90s that even the current major networks haven't really caught up with.

So, imagine your ideal/ultimate/perfect tech that enables people to meet one another - imagine, whether for friends or for dating, it's about BOTH your existing friends and meeting up with new people who share your interests... what part of existing networks that you use would you bring to it.

Take your best bits from Facebook, Twitter, OUTeverywhere, any other social network either online, offline (eg a social club), anything localised, anything that's global... put it all together in a big cauldron and what tech (mobile/web/both/mixture) would you love to have that doesn't exist yet? Would it have an emphasis on your interests? On your location? On creating events? On real-time chat? On forums where you can catch-up later? On your friends? On you? What's most important? How would it work? What features would it have? How would you improve OUT? Facebook? Twitter?
