I've been lucky enough to see the first two episodes of Jonathan Harvey's (Beautiful Thing, Gimme Gimme Gimme) new sitcom, Beautiful People, which starts on Thursday evening (BBC2, 9.30pm).

It's fucking excellent.

Each episode is presented as the childhood reminiscences of Simon, now the creative director of Barney's in New York, who grew up in the lowly surroundings of Reading. Young Simon and his best friend Kyle (who refuses to answer to anything other than 'Kylie') dream of a bigger, better life among the fabulous people.

But their home lives aren't too bad, really: they get on well with their parents, are generally accepted by their families; if anything, it's more Andrew Collins ("Where Did It All Go Right?"), with a dash of Adrian Mole and wrapped up in a few sequins and a feather boa.

Fantasy sequences abound, along with plenty of dance routines. Layton Williams, who plays Kylie, is a former stage Billy Elliot and it certainly shows. The BBC has put up this clip on YouTube which comes from a future episode:

For anybody dreading the grotesques of Gimme Gimme Gimme, rest assured -- this is a much more mature comedy. It's still relentlessly funny, but I'd put it on a par with US series such as My Name Is Earl in terms of being consistently funny and heartwarming.
