Charles Street, a gay bar/club in Brighton that some of you may know, is currently hosting a club night the first Friday of every month called The Asylum. The idea is that the club is decked out as a 'working insane asylum' - and the flyer for it harps on about what jolly good fun this will be.

Now, maybe I'm getting over-sensitive in my old age, but I find this hugely distasteful, even rather offensive in the way it trivialises mental illness and makes it sound like a mental home is a fun place to spend your evening. I almost feel moved to complain to somebody, if I knew who to complain to.

You can see some details of it here, but sadly not the whole flyer.

I'm sure some of you will think I am the living embodiment of political correctness gone mad, but.... what do you all think of it?

From someone whos been in a couple, they can be, but I do know what you mean, and im not sure how you deck somewhere out as an insane asylum, unless there are gonna be syringes full of haloperidole and diazapam or staff who are on major powertrips

So that would be dull, plain rooms painted magnolia. Doesn't sound very atmospheric to me.

I agree, this is hugely distateful and rather offensive. Having suffered from several bouts of mental illness the whole idea is very upsetting to discover.

I wish you luck if you do complain. The local council should be able to help along with some of the mental health support groups such as SANELINE.
