The chance of a lifetime - to sing in a performance of Mahler's 8th Symphony at the end of April in the Sage, Gateshead with the Newcastle Bach Choir/University Choir, soloists, orchestra and organ. Rehearsals have just started.

I have to admit not knowing Mahler's music at all well and want to get to know this piece with the help of a good recording.

My question - there are a number of possible recordings, so which one would you recommend I should buy and why? Thanks.

Actually, Mahler 8 has done very well on CD.

The Solti is well played and sung if a little intense.
Sinopoli is a good allround version.
Tennstedt is good if a little lightweight.
Rattle is excellent despite some (typically Rattle) questionable tempi at the codas.
Colin Davis is a favourite of mine.

If pushed, I might go for Horenstein on BBC Legends - nearly 50 years old but without doubt a superb performance and a truly great cd. The sound is pretty good, playing's fine but the atmosphere and sweep are magnificent.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any really awful ones.
