A topic from Pets & Other Animals: Cats

I've almost always had a cat wherever I've lived, and I'd really love to get one again. The problem is I now live on the main road through my village, and there's 30mph traffic going past my front door (though the bulk of it is during the rush hours), which obviously isn't the safest environment for a cat. My old next door neighbours used to have two and they'd somehow learned to stay in the back garden area, but I don't hold out much hope of training another cat to do the same.

Obviously I could have a house cat but I always think that's a little cruel, plus I'd like it to come out and share my garden with me in the summertime. Another alternative is to give a home to an older rescue cat who perhaps didn't want to go out much anyway, or who wouldn't be agile enough to negotiate jumping over my picket fences (I think I could cat-proof underneath them).

Any thoughts, suggestions or experiences?
