Back in early May I found my Cat Meeko collapsed in the sink where he had been violently ill. He spent a long weekend at the Vets and they discharged him as he was not eating but had stopped throwing up. He went back a couple of times and I was told not to worry as all cats throw up occasionally, and a cat will not starve himself to death. I spoke to a few people and I was told not to worry, I was concerned and felt he was losing weight. Then on 6th July I noticed that his skin looked yellow, I was travelling down to my parents thenext day and it was agreed that my parents Vets would look at him. They did blood tests immediately and found that he had half the expected blood count and his liver was possibly damaged. After having several tests for several things including blood being sent off to expert Vets being contacted at the Feline Advisory Board, and loads of possible things being checked and crossed off, it came to light that Meeko had been poisoned by a house-plant that I was given 18 months ago. Meeko had only recently started to eat the flowers of my Flaming Katy (aka Kalanchoe) which are highly toxic.

After two weeks I am pleased to announce that Meeko's blood count is now back in the normal range, he is starting to put weight on and no longer just skin and bones. We will not know for sometime the full damage to his liver and heart, but things are looking a lot better for him.

When I was talking to my parents Vet about the plant, I didn't realise it was toxic, and checked on the internet and only found a few references to it on toxic plant lists. I checked plants for sale and few mentioned it. Understandably it has made me very concerned about plants I bring into my flat now, and because I was anxious about any future plants I should acquire I have done some research and found this fantastic list of plants that are suitable around cats, so I am passing on its details to other cat owners and for anyone who is thinking of buying a plant for a cat owner.

Can I take this opportunity to thank quickfind:midler who removed the offending Flaming Katy's from my flat before my return.
