Does anyone have any experience or insight into this. I am based in North East London, and took my test about 20 years ago, and failed.

I was living in glorious Bayswater at the time and could not see where or why I should have a car. I have not driven since then, so 'rusty' would probably describe my driving skills.

Has anyone done an intense course just prior to the test - the week long thing. Would I need to take a week off work?

Any ideas or info would be very welcome.

I don't have any experience of the things you're asking about, though I did once look into a one week motorcycle riding course. It was residential and 8 hours a day. There were classroom lessons, practical lessons on a private course and practice on the road, day and night. It cost £400 about 4 years ago. It was a full-time course, so yes, a week off work would have been necessary.

If I hadn't driven for 20 years, I'd definitely take lessons, even though I have a full licence. In 20 years the roads have changed and so has the Highway Code. I know that you've seen changes as a pedestrian or passenger but they appear quite different when you're the driver. I'd even take a refresher lesson if I hadn't driven for two or three years.

I think that the residential "learn to drive" courses have a very good reputation.

Good luck!
