As I'm unpacking the car Saturday evening, I casually notice that I've not changed the tax disc from last year's yet and make a note to do it later on.

Later on, I look through my car papers and find the reminder still there, untouched and I suddenly realise I haven't taxed the car at all. It ran out at the end of September.

Eek! Thank God for online-taxing.

For people like me, they need to send at least 3 extra reminders.

Ooops...

Lucky the police didn't stop you really!

My parents had the same (well their's was because the garage didn't send the right paper work to the DVLA so they never got the reminder) - although it was a traffic warden that pointed it out to mum.

I'm usually quite good at remembering to do it - although I have had the situation where I have the tax disc, but forget to put it into my car for a few days :S.

Me too, I must have had the MOT done and then just forgot to do the tax bit.

I think you're right, I'm very lucky I wasn't pulled over/ticketed. I assume that since the online form started the tax from Oct 1 that'll be the end of it (i.e. they won't come after me for not SORNing, etc).

gosh John lucky you weren't stopped

you may find that you've been issued with an automatic penalty already (but I think you have 28 days before that happens)

I always forget to get tax for about a week after it expires

If you don't tax or SORN your vehicle
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency carries out a computer check each month, as well as roadside checks to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. You could face an automatic penalty of £80 as well as a minimum fine of £1000. Your vehicle could be clamped, impounded or even crushed.
