A topic from Vehicles & Transport: Cars

So I was on holiday in Scotland last week. I'd had a stop-over with a friend in Stirling and was meandering up to Kyle of Lochalsh to meet my other friends off the 20:30 train from London to spend the next few days on Skye, Harris and Lewis.

With beautiful weather it was the perfect opporunity to revisit Applecross and tavel that wonderful mountain road across to Lochcarron, simply one of the most stunning roads in Scotland.

I rounded a corner and the magnificent view was breathtaking. I simply had to stop and take a photo, so I pulled in to a passing place and nipped out of the car. A few seconds later I wen to get back in... and the effing central locking had locked the doors for no apparent reason. Arrrgggghhhh. It's only supposed to do that if the handbrake is off... but I'm on a slight slope and handbrake is most definitely on!

So there I was in just tee-shirt on this windy mountain pass, and my God there was a nip in the air up there, not being able to get back in to my car.

I tried all the doors, and the boot, and, of course they are all locked. I think of calling the RAC (though what they could have done is beyond me) but my main phone is in the car, and my Orange phone which never seems to have a signal in the Scottish Highlands, typically isn;t playing ball.

There was only one thing for it: I picked up a small rock and tried to break the small quarter panel on the rear door. A good few whacks and not a scratch on it. I tried with a bigger rock, but the results were no different. I can't believe just how difficult a small pane of glass can be to break.

An elderley couple came up the hill in their car and I flagged them down. We tried a screwdriver to prize the window, but it wasn't budging. Eventually he tried his hammer and after a few blows caught the edge of the window and it shattered. Phew. I really was starting to panic by then.

Thankfully I managed to tape up the window when I arrived at the guest house and still the patch remains until I can get out to get a replacement. Another unexpected expense of the holiday.

Why is it my 'leisurely drives' turn out to be anything but? qv quickfind:304371
