Ok, I'm *useless* at picking stuff to read. I have a few authors I enjoy reading, but I've pretty much got all their books now.

So I'm after some suggestions from the fine folk of OUT :D.

My current collection includes:

Tom Clancy
Dale Brown
Richard Hermann Jnr.
Larry Bond

(so techno-thrillers are good :D).

I've also got a few

Terry Pratchet
Tom Holt

And a pile of other stuff that escapes me just now :S

I'm after books like those ones, or Sci-Fi type stuff as I enjoy that. Not so keen on fantasy type stuff really, nor on romance or the like.

Basically I read for escapism (hence the stuff I have), and not for any higher purpose. I don't particularly want anything that is big and meaty and 'literature' (the stuff they forced you to read at school for example), unless it genuinely is a good read.

I dunno if I'm being too picky, but I'd welcome any suggestions. Ta!

(Oh and if you feel so inclined, if you suggest a book, and feel like saying why you suggest it that'd be fab :D)

Matthew Reilly.

Start with Contest, or Ice Station, and then move on.

They're cheesey, schlocky, action-filled romps. And they're soooo much fun.

I've read Kenneth Williams's autobiography and now almost finshed his diaries, a great insight into him and I would recommend those.

I quite enjoyed Terry Pratchets Wintersmith.

You need to read Jonathan Strouds Bartimaeus trilogy. If you like Pratchett I think you will appreciate some of the humour in them. Plus they are possibly the best fantasy trilogy for a long long time. I am tempted to put them above His Dark Materials.

Hmm.... I *think* I have his "Area 7" - the title is ringing a bell in the back of my mind.....

Ah - I've never read an autobiography before!

quoting > "You need to read Jonathan Strouds Bartimaeus trilogy"

Ooo - Amazon have them as a nice three book hardback box set type thing for £20 :D

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels are James Bondesque if that area interests you.

Lee Child writes very easy to read, interesting one man against the world type thriller novels that I would recommend too.

And James Patterson's novels are detective crime fiction that you'll finish in a few days.

Have you tried Carl Hiasen or Christopher Brookmyre?

Funny, sort of crime based but not the 'straight' crime stuff (which I do not like).

Very easy to read.

I read them years back - they never really hit the spot with me I have to admit (not quite sure why tho!)

Ah - might have a look - ta :)

quoting > "Have you tried Carl Hiasen or Christopher Brookmyre?"

Nope - never even heard of them! I'll give 'em a look too :)
