If you are from the North East, in particular Peterlee you will be aware of a sculpture named the Apollo Pavilion, although more commonly known as the Pasmore Pavilion.

It was constructed (from 1963 until 1970) as both a sculpture and a piece of architecture, performing the function of a bridge connecting two housing estates.

It was designed by British artist Victor Pasmore, who also designed the housing around the Pavilion. The idea was to incorporate the sculpture into the surrounding areas.

There is an interesting read on it here:

It was to act as a symbol of a modern new town, hence the rather abstract design, while also being a place to linger. Unfortunately the Apollo Pavilion attracted the wrong kind of lingering people, who defaced it with Graffiti, it became a haunt for people to booze and smoke. With the sculpture being in a residential area, there were lots of complaints; access to the Pavilion was removed, therefore it lots its functionality and there it has stood ever since, neglected and decaying; the murals that adorned the sculpture worn away.

For some this sign of 'Modernism' became 'Monstrosity', for others it was loved and people wanted it to be revived from its suffering.

I read in my local paper today and finally a result; a local steering group have applied for a grant from the lottery, amongst other sources to revive the Apollo Pavilion; giving access back to it so once again it can function, the area will be cleaned up and a Museum about the sculpture will be opened up in one of the neighbouring houses.

It is said that there will be opportunities for local schools, businesses, etc. This is what I want to hear; it may look tired and for some even ugly, but it has potential. I just hope it does not after the revival, become neglected.
