photoSane, sorted and switched-on guy, enjoying life in Brighton. I run my own small business, perform as a stand-up comic and sing with a gay choir. I live with my partner (who I met on Out many moons ago) and our dog. I'm as likely to be tending the garden as pounding a dance floor, or to be in a suit as in my leathers. Aren't contradictions wonderful?

My laptop is my most vital business tool, but I'm beginning to think about new ways of working with technology to make life easier, but could do with some advice.

I am self employed and my work moves between my office, home and working out and about, especially going up to London for meetings and to run training sessions. I currently have a 15" Powerbook, which is starting to show signs of age, and I've always tried to upgrade my laptop every 2 or 3 years while it still has some resale value. I use the same laptop as my 'home' computer as well, in the evenings and weekends.

The downside of my current arrangement is that I have to lug the Powerbook around with me everywhere I go (including to and from work every morning and evening) and it's knackering my back, despite buying a proper rucksack for it.

I've been wondering about having two computers - one at the office and one at home - but my problem then becomes focused on email - my Entourage database is the heart of my business and I'd need access to not only my inbox but also to my (extensive) files of previous emails. Is there any way of seeing these on both machines, syncing them somehow so the same set of files & current mails always appears on both?

Needless to say the Macbook Air is an attractive option (I SO want one) because it is so much lighter for carrying around, but (a) I need a Firewire port to plug a video camera into for training purposes and (b) I'm loathed to move to a smaller screen as even on the 15" screen I sometimes struggle to keep open the documents I need.

Any thoughts/advice/questions welcome!

Why not buy the macbook air and get a large monitor too from Apple for home and plug it in that. firewire comes as standard on all apple machines so your sorted for that one.

Firewire is standard - except on the MacBook Air - it's oly got a USB and a mini-DV (?) socket - but no firewire!

A monitor may be a good move, actually - I'd need to work out whether to keep it at home or work!

I belive Entourage has an option that leaves a copy of each email message on your ISP's mail server, so you can see all the messages from more than one machine.

Never tried it myself though, so don't know how well it works.
