mac OS 10.4.11 trashed1 :-(

I down;oaded Skype for my mac and installed it.

I clicked the phone me to test your mic and headphones in Skype and heard nothing in my headset...

I clicked the red phone icon to cancel the call and Skype crashed. Force quit for Skype (right clicking the little black arrow head under the Skype icon in the dock) would not work.

I tried to shutdown the mac from the apple menu at the top right of my screen and it told me it couldn't because Skype would not quit. I then switched the mac off and restarted.

My mac now has no clock or any of the normal icons (system menus?) in the top right of the screen (such as the airport icon that lets me reconnect to my WiFi router to get internet every time I reboot the mac and the link that lets you logon as another user)

I've got on the internet by running a long Cat5 cable to my router (2 rooms away).

I think I need to wipe my mac and reinstall macOS X from the install disks?

I have backed-up my folder from the Macintosh HD\users\myname folder to my external HDD. Can I assume that my e-mails and stuff from MS Entourage 2004 is stored in there or do I need to back-up another folder too?

Is there any way to sort out my mac other than a wipe and re-build?

Oh, and the mac now crashes every 30 mins or so...

Greys out the screen and brings up a multi-language box telling me that mac OS X terminated unexpectedly and that I need to hold down the power button to switch off and restart.

I wish I'd never downloaded and installed Skype!
