"The Wall Street Journal has officially backed up the "iPhone nano" rumor that was resurrected by Bloomberg last week, with new sources adding more details about the alleged device. In a report published Sunday, the Journal said that its own "people familiar with the matter" discussed miniature iPhone, which apparently goes by a code name of "N97.""

"When Bloomberg discussed the smaller iPhone on Thursday of last week, it said the device was about one-third smaller than the current iPhone and that it would be priced around $200 before carrier subsidies. The WSJ's sources pin the size at about half that of the current iPhone and said it would cost carriers half as much (the average selling price to carriers is currently $625). The source—who saw the prototype personally—also said that it had an "edge-to-edge" touchscreen, voice navigation, and an on-screen keyboard."

The only reason this rumour continues year after year is because everyone knows that Apple will eventually do this. Theres only so many people that are prepared to cough up £450 for a phone, no matter how good it is.

The situation now reminds me of the iPod market in about 2004/5. Apples premiere device was the top seller with about 60% share, but new devices were coming out on a daily basis and eating away at their market. Sony, Sandisk, Creative, iRiver etc etc.

Then came the iPod mini, later renamed the nano, and BANG, Apple wiped almost every other MP3 device off the planet with their little cheap player.

Now in the mobile market, Apple once again have the top end sewn up, but the big battle is going on in the mid-range where Android is scooping up market share like theres no tomorrow.

I think it's now or never for the iPhone 'nano'

I just can't see it happening. That rumor has been doing the rounds since the 3G came out..

If it does turn out to be true, whats the point, the current iPhone's screen is small enough...

I just think there aren't any other rumors going around for the iPad 2 or iPhone 5 so this one has re-surfaced.

I'm not sure if the rumours are true or not, but I can see why there'd be a market for such a device. If not a smaller form factor, certainly a less expensive, more "internationally acceptable" device. For instance, some states aren't too keen with their citizens having GPS devices or it could have less memory (to save money), etc.
