iBook gone sluggish

Over the past three days, my G4 iBook running OSX 10.4.7 has suddenly gone sluggish, and starting doing a few minor strange things. Symptoms are:

- When I'm typing a message on OUT for example, sometimes everything will seem to pause even though I'm still entering text. After a couple of seconds, it will catch up and the text will appear, but sometimes the characters will be out of order

- If I pull down the blue scroll bar to move to the bottom of a webpage, again everything will pause for a couple of seconds before it catches up

(these pauses seem to happen on a fairly regular timed basis, and don't seem connected to or caused by the action I'm trying to do)

- When trying to rename a folder earlier, the whole filename box went blue so I couldn't read it at all, and thus couldn't change the name. It worked OK later though, after a few more attempts

- I often get an incorrect blue bar in the vertical scroll bar, e.g. the blue bar will be very long indicating it thinks the page depth is quite short, when in fact the page depth is much longer and the blue bar should be correspondingly much shorter. When I click on the blue bar to scroll, I then often get two - one correctly proportioned and the original incorrect one.

I haven't installed any new software recently, or in fact done anything different at all! 75% of the time my iBook is running only Safari and no other applications.

Any ideas on what's going wrong and how I can fix it?
