How do you format the hard disk?

OK, I have an old G4 that I was given free. I thought that I'd install Leopard but somehow it's gone wrong. The computer won't boot up and all I get is a file symbol with a ? in the middle and the Finder symbol replacing it in alternating flashes. |

Do you have the boot disc with the utils on??? format is on this bootable disc if memory serve me right |
