I'd be grateful for any advice on the best automated back-up software to get to do incremental back-ups for a Mac running OS X 10.4.

As a .Mac member, I use their Backup, but I am helping a friend who doesn't want the on-going committment to .Mac. They have bought a NAS drive and will be backing-up to that.

Backup allows me to back-up my personal data and settings to my iDisk. Do other back-up programs allow you to do this as a seperate function- although, obviously, not to an iDisk?

I haven't used it myself, but I've had SuperDuper! recommended to me before.

In freeware mode, it can clone full drives; payment unlocks scheduling and an incremental backup-like 'Smart Update' mode.

As a full drive clone, the backup will include all users' personal settings. And, if the internal drive fails for any reason, the Mac can be booted from the backup drive.

Thanks very much for those options. As they're shareware, I'll look forward to trying both.

Thanks again,

Peter

The one from Scott is the one I use and it's really good. And its simple to use.

This won't help for another few months, but upgrading to OS X 10.5 when it comes out will provide Time Machine, which should me more painless to use than anything else, and should not require the overprices dotmac service. It will however require an external hard drive, but these are getting cheaper by the day. 10.5 (Leopard) will be £85 or so, but includes a major overhaul to OS X, of which Time Machine is just one component.

If backups onto CD or DVD are required, then one of the other programs may be necessary.

I'm keeping my dotmac running until 10.5 is released, then I might drop it. The killer feature of dotmac fro me is synchronising bookmarks and website passwords so painlessly, but that doesn't merit the cost on its own.
