"Apple has unveiled its much-anticipated iCloud service at its annual developers' conference.

Apple boss Steve Jobs returned from medical leave to show off the features of the web-based service. He said iCloud was necessary because the PC was no longer the digital hub of users' digital lives.

The web-based service aims to synchronise and co-ordinate the key content people store and share across their devices.

Music match

Contacts, calendar and mail applications have been re-written so a change to one propagates across the other versions on separate devices. This re-writing means Apple's MobileMe service will soon cease to exist. Anyone buying an app, book or music track for one device will see it replicated on the other Apple devices they own. Similarly, bookmarks for interesting web pages will be shared across all gadgets.

Mr Jobs stressed that iCloud was "not just a hard disk in the sky". "We are demoting the PC and Mac to just be a device," he said. "And moving the digital hub centre of your digital life to the cloud.""

Some very interesting, and hopefully Apple will do it very well but there's little innovative here. Things like the new Notification Bar, syncing over the air, a "read it later", and even a "dropbox" are already there for either Android or 3rd party providers on the iPhone.

Perhaps the most interesting is the idea of Music Match - which may well be more of a Spotify killer than a Google/Amazon killer.

You could argue that's a good thing. Apple has looked at how the iOS developer community has achieved a consensus upon how they want their applications to work, and gone, "okay, that's the sort of thing that all apps should be able to integrate easily." So the coding patterns that developers have started using become officially supported APIs. That can be annoying for people like Dropbox, who do a lot of hard work only for "their" idea to be superseded by an iOS upgrade.

I've been looking through the iOS developer docs and there's lots that enable app developers to take advantage of features like iCloud shared storage with very little additional coding. As with iOS 4, the majority of new features occur "under the hood" - they are things that help ensure app developers improve the quality and robustness of their app. That's what Apple meant when they said iOS 5 has "200 new features" - the few they showed off at the demonstration yesterday are the most visible ones for device users: the others will show up in ios5-optimised apps.
