It was 27 October 1986 that BBC1 started daytime broadcasting and a bit of TV history came to an end with the cessation of daytime intervals on BBC1. BBc2 held out for another three years, gradually expanding tis broadcasting horus when it was not broadcasting schools programmes and by the end of 1989 BBc2 was on air every day from 8am.

To me, TV was in many ways more interesting when you ahd the closedowns. intervals, Ceefax pages etc rather than the rubbish we seem to get on daytime TV these days.

Incidently, ITV began daytime transmissions 14 years before the BBC although Schools programming did not transfer to Channel 4 until 1987.

I am correct in thinking that BBC2 still does the ceefax pages at night?

You are correct in that thinking. BBC2 does not, as yet, broadcast 24/7 and you will see Ceefax Pages at the weekend in the minutes, sometimes hour or two, before programmes start at 6am.

I'm part of the generation of ITV Schools on Channel 4... with the rotating ITV logos in rainbow colours and then the countdown clock where the minutes ticked away inside a tube-like circle.

Great music in that era, too. Most of the kids I went with to school liked it too, we wanted to tune in early to things we'd be watching at school, or we'd tell the teacher not to fast forward the video to the start of the programme on the video just to hear it :)
