They were my mother's but she gave them to me years ago because she couldn't be bothered with the intricacies of a hifi, versus the simplicity of a record player. For the first time in years I looked through them. I listened to the B side of a Beatles EP, You Were Made For Me by Freddie and the Dreamers and then I came across this This song always made me laugh, as far back as I can remember. But it's also fascinating from the point of view of social history. English people, probably Scots, Welsh and Irish too, did tend to regard everything foreign as suspicious. It was funny because the words were humorous but it was also funny because it was so close to reality. |
